Learning to Lecture in English

14 December 2018

The students of Chemistry Department who are participating in the Project “Development of Foreign Language Competence of TSU Students” attended an English-language lecture on metal-organic frameworks delivered by Sergey Ten, a postgraduate student anda Laboratory of Catalytic Research staff member. The event was held Nadezhda Petrunina,Ass. Prof., a teacher of English.

MOFs are consistently in demand in various industries, particularly in catalysis, so cost-effective and efficient technologies for their production are the subject of the present-day research trends. Sergey spoke about the approaches to the production of metallic nanoparticles, about the techniques of preparing reactants, and about the possible structure of the final synthesis product, namely, a catalyst based on a certain metal. After that, the lecturing apprentice answered the students' questions and clarified all the unfamiliar terms.A translation practice and a discussion session followed.
Olga Beloussova, a fourth year student: The lecture was understandable and interesting even for a person who is not interested in this area. I think it would be interesting to listen to a postgraduate lecture on a different topic.

Andrey Pavlenko, a fourth year student: I’d like to highlight interesting performance of the speaker and fluent usage of academic language. I wish our guest good luck in his further research.

Evgeny Upyrenko, a fourth year student: Presentation of the postgraduate student was fine; he used visual and intelligible resources to explain his scientific work. He also answered all of the questions in a clear way.

Ekaterina Senko, a fourth year student: Everything about Sergey’s speech was quite understandable, a visual presentation helped us to catch the essential points. And the discussion after the lecture was also a good idea. Sergey answered the main questions. The lecture lasted more than forty minutes, but time passed quickly because it was interesting! Thank you for this event.
