TSU has released the world's first dialect dictionary of synonyms

22 November 2016

The TSU Publishing House has released the Dictionary of Siberian Dialect Synonyms, which has no analogues in Russia or abroad. It was prepared by Olga Blinova, professor at the Department of Russian Language of Tomsk State University and graduate students Maria Tolstova and Maria Ghawar. The release of the dictionary was financed by the TSU Endowment Fund.

- A dictionary of synonyms is the most difficult type because of the features of the structure and semantics of the word, its fragility and mobility, and the lack of certainty, - says Maria Tolstova. - Even more difficult is to make such a dictionary for a dialect.

The publication continues the multi-volume series of the Vershininskie dictionaries. This is a unique project for the study of one of the old-Russian dialects of the Middle Ob–a dialect of the Vershinino village of the Tomsk Region and the adjoining villages Baturino and Yarskoe. It has been conducted for more than a half century by Tomsk dialectologists led by Professor Olga Blinova. During this time, teachers and students of the Department of the Russian Language have made several dozen expeditions. They have created more than 20 volumes of the dictionary, which reflects the speech of the local old-timers, and collected a rich card file of the words and phraseological units of the descendants of the first settlers.
