2 June 2020

Alireza Gorbani, a third-year student at the TSU Faculty of Philology, took 1st place in the regional round of the Olympiada in Russian as a Foreign Language, “Time to Learn Russian!” Students from five Tomsk universities took part in the Olympiada, and TSU international students took 2nd place in the team competition.

A TSU student from Iran, Alireza Gorbani, has been studying Russian for 4 years. He admits that the tests of the Olympiada were not easy for him. However, he scored 76.5 points, 5 points ahead of the closest opponent. The theme of this year’s Olympiada is “Our Universities”. The tasks included a lexical and grammatical test (level B1 - B2), listening, and a description of a video fragment.

150 to 200 international students annually study in various forms and programs of study at the TSU Faculty of Philology. After graduation, all of them, as a rule, associate their professional activities with the Russian language: they work as teachers, translators, and staff of international offices at universities, and in trade and travel companies focused on Russia, - comments Svetlana Fashchanova, Deputy Dean for Work with International Students.

TSU’s team included 8 international students: Chan Le Quan (Faculty of Philology, Vietnam), Julian Simon Dicker (Faculty of Philology, Germany), Liu Xi (Faculty of Philology, China), Alireza Gorbani (Faculty of Philology, Iran), Mandy Krause (Faculty of Philology, Germany), Carlos Tizvi (Faculty of Physics and Engineering, Zimbabwe), Juan Manuel Sialo Century (Institute of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Equatorial Guinea), and Juan Enrique Garcia (Faculty of Historical and Political Studies, USA).
