TSU holds an international conference with “thinking" robots

9 December 2016

On December 7-10, Tomsk State University is hosting the first international conference Cognitive Robotics. The participants became scientists and industrialists from Russia, Kazakhstan, Germany, America, and Bulgaria, and robots who demonstrated their skills at the exhibition and workshops.

- Cognitive robotics is one of the last of the world scientific trends – said Vladimir Syryamkin, the head of the TSU international laboratory Vision Systems. - Scientists from different countries are trying to create more sophisticated robots with intelligent control. Many of smart systems have already become part of our lives, they are involved in security, medicine (for example, for diagnosis of diseases), education, and many other areas.

The feature of thinking robots lies in the fact that their main component is not hardware but software and a special control system. They help robots to learn and draw conclusions about how to behave in response to the challenges in difficult situations. For example, robotic machines are free to decide what action should be taken when driving on difficult terrain and what to do in case of insurmountable obstacles.

TSU conference discusses a wide range of issues and problems, including cognitive technologies and artificial intelligence in control systems of robotized complexes for land, air, and undersea deploying. In a separate section scientists will discuss ways to help the robots for better to seeing and hearing.

The work of 6 sections will be conducted within the four-day conference. Also under the work of the sections All-Russian conference Mobile Robotics and specialized competition of innovation projects will be held. Along with this, the programme of the conference contains competitions in robotics among pupils and students, the exhibition of scientific and technological achievements (robot rescuers, robots, machines, and other robotic systems), and lectures and workshops from the TSU partner - National Instruments Corporation (USA).
