12 April 2016

Agency Round University Ranking (RUR) published a ranking of universities 2016. Tomsk State University has taken the hundredth position of the ranking for the quality of teaching and became the second among Russian universities for this indicator.

Rating RUR assesses universities of the world in four areas: the quality of the studies (40% of university assessment), the quality of teaching (40%), the level of internationalization (10%), and the level of financial stability (10%). The overall assessment of the university is formed on the basis of these indicators. In 2016 Tomsk State University was ranked 327th in overall ranking – so it was the third among Russian universities. And now it rose by 42 points compared to the last year.

TSU took 100th place for the quality of education. The agency experts assert that this criterion is crucial for Russian universities and reflect their specifics to a greater extent than the general criterion.

- In contrast to the ranking agencies THE and QS, which use cientometric data of Scopus database when calculating the results, RUR is based on Web of Science of Thomson Reuters, - says Irina Zholobova, Director of the Information-Analytical Centre of TSU. - And the results of the rankings, which are calculated using different scientometric information sources, give a more balanced picture of universities’ positions.

In the QS University Rankings Tomsk State University is in the group of 481-490, ranked in the top-300 in the subject areas Physics and Astronomy and Modern Languages in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, and occupies the 44th place among QS University Rankings: BRICS countries.
