TSU creates a system for protecting property on the blockchain

2 November 2017

The project was developed by scientists at the Laboratory of Digital Economy, and now a demo version has been released. The creators point out that the system needs to be further developed: It is necessary to solve not only technical problems but also legal ones. The plans are to use smart contracts, through which it is possible to transfer intellectual property rights and to sell and carry out other operations.

- Now it is only a “toy”, on which we showed our work on the management of intellectual property. But this is a really working technology on the blockchain, which practically hasn’t been done yet in Russia universities. Many issues still need to be resolved, including with Rospatent, - says Konstantin Belyakov, Vice-Rector of TSU for Innovation.

The concept is that different management approaches are applied to different types of intellectual property objects. There are three groups. The first is for objects of intellectual property that were created for specific market requests and have a high degree of commercialization. The second is for the objects that do not have direct access by the consumer but have a high degree of commercialization. And the third group has a low degree of commercialization, not related to promising markets. In relation to each group, there are certain mechanisms of influence.

As explained in the Department of Innovation, work with objects of intellectual property will be conducted on the blockchain.

- It was necessary to do it yesterday. The whole world is already doing this, - says Konstantin Belyakov about the implementation of programs on the blockchain. -We have a task: besides doing something, we also need to teach this to students. Graduates who say that they know how to do something with this technology have a salary not less than 250,000 a month. We, the University, are doing everything to increase the competitiveness of our students.

Tomsk State University has three times been one of the Russian leaders in the rating of Rospatent in the number of applications for intellectual property objects - in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
