The graduate school Siberia and the Arctic will improve the training of young scientists through collaborating with other Tomsk universities. This will enable implementing joint scientific projects and improving the quality of research on the environment, climate change, and biodiversity in Siberia and the Arctic.
The Big Tomsk University has begun recruiting for 13 graduate schools, 3 of them implemented under TSU’s supervision, including the international interdisciplinary school Siberia and the Arctic. Its leader is Sergey Kirpotin, director of the TSU Center of Excellence Bio-Clim-Land.
- Earth Sciences is the area in which we are world leaders. Siberia as a natural mega-installation is our collider, which has no analogs in the world. This is a territory of about 3,000 km in length, including all-natural zones - from the mountain massifs of Southern Siberia to the tundra zones of the deep Arctic, and this makes it a platform for studying climatic changes and anthropogenic impacts, - says Sergey Kirpotin.
In the graduate school, young scientists will work with world-class professors: Oleg Pokrovsky, a scientist at TSU and the Midi-Pyrenees Observatory (Toulouse, France); Terry Callaghan, Academic Supervisor of SecNet, TSU and University of Sheffield; Igor Semiletov, a specialist in oceanology and professor at TPU, and others.
Under the scientists’ guidance, the students will develop such scientific areas as landscape ecology, research on the Arctic shelf, biodiversity, climatic changes, biogeochemical cycles of lakes and swamps, and others.
- The idea of the Big Tomsk University is desirable for us because the goal of this project is collaboration and interaction. In this case, we, as representatives of Tomsk universities, complement each other. For example, TPU has a project to study the shelf (shallow coastal zone of the ocean), and they analyze the biogeochemical removal of the great Siberian rivers toward the world’s oceans, while we, on the contrary, work on land and deal with inland waters. By interacting, we will be able to see a more complete picture, including on climatic processes, - explains Sergey Kirpotin.
In the process of the joint training of scientific personnel, Tomsk universities will organize joint conferences, seminars, and lectures with invited experts. Also, graduate students will work in the international network SecNet, created under the auspices of TSU to study environmental transformation. Consolidation of Tomsk universities' efforts will provide the graduate student with a rich research environment for professional growth and high-quality dissertation preparation.
Also, the working group has developed a common improved online module for all graduate students of the Academy of Sciences, which includes both basic and optional courses of the educational program. The elective disciplines include Grantwriting Technologies, Academic Skills and Writing Courses, Distance Learning Technologies, and others.
