Good results for TSU in metallurgy and inventive activity

3 June 2020

The Expert Analytical Center completed the next stage of research on the publication and inventive activity of Russian universities. TSU entered the first lines among the universities in two areas at once: metallurgy and inventive activity. In eight subject areas, TSU is among the five strongest universities in the country.

When preparing the publication activity ranking, 16 main areas are considered, among them: engineering, computer science, mathematics, materials science, earth sciences, ecology, social sciences, chemical technologies, chemistry, energy, humanities, life sciences, physics, economics, management, and medicine.

“Metallurgy (as a part of Materials Science), National Research Tomsk State University rose to 1st place” - the ranking compilers said in the statement.

Alexander Vorozhtsov, TSU Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, noted that such high metallurgy indicators are ensured by the work of several scientific groups at once. Ilya Zhukov’s team works in this area, creating light alloys based on aluminum and magnesium; Manzur Ziyatdinov’s group is engaged in high-nitrogen steels; and Vladimir Promakhov is engaged in additive technologies. Research in metallophysics is carried out by the scientific groups of Professor Victor Gunther and Professor Yuri Chumlyakov.

- Over the course of several years, TSU has focused on the development of these areas, which gave a natural result, - the Vice-Rector emphasized.

TSU is included in the five leaders in earth sciences (5th place), physics and astronomy (5th place), medicine (4-6th place), materials science (5-6th place), engineering (3-5th place), chemistry (5-6th place), chemical technology (3-4th place), and ecology (4th place).

When compiling the index, the number of university patents sold, licensed, and developed in collaboration with companies registered abroad over the past 5 years was taken into account. The share of cited university patents, the share of current university patents in the total number of registered patents, and the total number of patents registered in 5 years were also considered.
