TSU will create a Master's programme with UArctic

7 December 2016

Sergei Kirpotin, Director of the TSU Centre BioClimLand, spoke about the results of the federal forum Arctic Days in Moscow - 2016. The scientist said that TSU, as one of the first universities included in the National Arctic Research and Education Consortium, plans to establish a Master's programme for the study of the Arctic together with the Northern (Arctic) Federal University (NArFU) named after M.V. Lomonosov and then bring it to the international level.

The NArFU-led consortium is a voluntary association of universities, research organizations, and companies that implement training programmes for the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and conduct research and economic activities in the Arctic zone. The consortium focuses on creating a common scientific and educational space.

- This year we have opened the Master's programme Study of Siberia and the Arctic, which prepares professional researchers in the Arctic. The competition was three people for a place. Already next year we will work with NArFU as the head Russian university for studying this question, - says Sergey Kirpotin. - In the future, the programme may become an international network that will include, for example, Finland and Norway.

For many years TSU has been engaged in studying the landscapes of Siberia, including the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas, which are a convenient platform for investigating climate change and human impact. In addition, TSU is developing measurement systems for regular monitoring of the Arctic zone and is bringing together leading scientists for joint research in the Siberian Arctic.

Siberia is a powerful megaregion that particularly affects climate change on the planet. To unite and coordinate the efforts of researchers, TSU established the research centre Trans-Siberian Scientific Way and opened the SecNET network, in whose organizing 8 countries are already involved.
