Geologists will discuss the world potential of mineral resources at TSU

The eighth All-Russian petrographic conference with international participation was launched on the basis of the Faculty of Geology and Geography. Leading researchers from Russia, Canada, Spain, and the USA will discuss the features of the study of magma in the earth's crust, mineral resources, their age and capacity.

- Among the sciences, developed in the University, a significant role is played by the Earth sciences - said Ivan Ivonin, Vice-Rector for Academic Research. - Our advantage is that TSU is located in the vast Siberia, where there are interesting geological formations. Therefore, our scientists engaged in the study of crystal, mineral, interaction of elements in the crust, and others. All it is actual to the scientific and applied point of view.

It is important conference for my colleagues and me. It is dedicated to igneous and metamorphic rocks - liquid formations that spill out onto the surface as lava - said Richard Ernst, professor at Carleton University. We also will discuss Siberia – it is a large region, we couldn’t understand and estimate the world situation without studying its geological data.

120 speakers are taking part at the conference. They are leading scientists in geology, petrology, professors and academics from 60 world geological organizations. They will tell about the tectonic movements, gold deposits, studies of magma in the Middle and Southern Urals, will discuss the issues of determining the age of minerals.

On December 2, a separate youth session of workshop for young scientists is planned. The best papers presented by researchers at the age up to 35 will be supported by grants from the TSU, as well as published in the new journal Geosphere Research.

TSU received a megagrant for 2017-2020 for creating a new laboratory on geochronology and geodynamics, where scientists will define the age of geological objects and specify the potential of Siberian deposits. The project is implemented by TSU specialist under famous scientist Richard Ernst (Canada) and scientists from the USA, China, and Spain.
